Workshop Overview : Leadership and Managerial Skills

Introduction

To be effective, Managers and subordinates alike should not only be proficient in technical skills but also have command on interpersonal skills or what we call people skills. Quality employees are no more influenced by sheer fringe benefits and wages, they expect both their physical and emotional needs are taken care of by the employer. A manager with good interpersonal skills is likely to make the workplace more pleasant, which, in turn, makes it easier to hire and to retain competent employees. Similarly, leadership skills help the subordinates to be an effective team player as well as an effective ambassador of the organization. Going through the leadership training, a subordinate gets exposed to the challenges faced by the managers on a daily basis and they (the subordinates) transform themselves to support the manager to be successful. Instead of being a force of resistance to what the managers/management is trying to implement for the overall growth/benefit of the organization, they become the change agents in the process.

Objectives

We would like to inspire the managerial staffs to sharpen their interpersonal skills and manage the workforce with greater effectiveness. Our finding is that anyone having a desire to lead people towards organisational vision, can master the people skills and can create necessary environment where employees would love to work. The most prominent skills where a manager should concentrate are given below. Similarly, the subordinates go through the process of appreciating the most common traits of an effective leader and they develop an eye for valuing the manager’s approach to many situations and their manners to deal with the people issues. By sharpening the leadership skills, the subordinates get to help each other more effectively and get motivated to practice skills that will help them attain leadership positions in the organization.

Session Flow

  • I- Leadership

There always is a debate on leadership. Some experts say “Leaders are born - They are born with some qualities, called traits that naturally inspire them to lead people. If someone is not born with those traits he can never be a leader”. However, modern research on corporate leadership has disproved the traditional trait concept. They have enough evidence to prove that leadership is behaviour and can be acquired by those who are interested in leading people. The contingent theories on the leadership, with several instances, have further informed that leadership is situational. A particular leadership style suits to a particular situation, and leaders should change their styles to adapt them with the changing circumstances.

We will provide some inputs and inspire people in the organisation to acquire those traits or qualities and lead people in the right direction to achieve corporate goals. Below is a typical flow we adopt:

  • .   Why Leadership and What is leadership?
  • .   Example of leaders and what make them a leader
  • .   A group discussion as to what are the common leadership traits
  • .   Different Leadership Styles and their situational adoption
  • .   Example of Leadership Traits as discussed in some organizations
  • .   Participants will get opportunity to use some of the leadership traits (through presentation).
  • .   The benefit of leadership framework and a basis for performance evaluation
  • .   The group agrees on a basic framework of leadership and its benefits
  • II- Motivation :
  • .   What motivates people to give their best at the workplace?
  • .   Why some people excel and why others remain disinterested in work?
  • .   Can the manager motivate people to strive for excellence?
  • .   It has been observed that a competitive and effective organisation distinct itself from its competitor through a motivated workforce
  • .   In games and sports and even in warfare, history is full of examples when a motivated team or army have defeated an enemy much bigger than its size. Therefore, learning how to motivate employees has become an essential skill for managers
  • .   We would discuss several techniques that motivate workforce and sharpen managers’ skill in the given areas
  • III- Teambuilding :

Society is interdependent, so also every organisation. We all have moved from the stage of dependence to independence and ultimately reach the stage on Interdependence. A manager can never do them all in an organisation. He has to complete the task through the people at his command. But people give their best when they work as a team, not when they are fragmented. How to form a team and get the best out of people? We will let the managers know the importance of team building and the best techniques to build a team that succeeds

  • IV- Effective Communication :

Effective managers create enthusiasm amongst their people at the work place. They share the vision and inspire the employees to reach the destination. For all this a manager has to effectively communicate with people. It can be about Reading, writing, Speaking, listening, about two way communication or even about non- verbal communication or body language. The manager has to master the skill of effective communication to succeed in every step

  • V- Work- Life balance :

Career is only a part of human life and true success. A healthy Body, soothing relationship, leading a life of one’ choice are all important in human life. It has been observed that work place activities are taking most of a manager’s life leaving little for family, society, leisure or for self- actualisation. We will give some insight for a balanced life in a manager’s life. The ultimate success is not just about excelling in professional career but on leading a complete life that would happiness to a manager’s life
